Crashes on startup

Post by Tetsuya »

Greetings people!

I have encountered a problem and am, by now, kinda puzzled on what to try and solve it. Sword of the Stars: The pit crashes on startup, every time i attempt to start it via Steam i recieved an "unknown error", until i ran the program as administrator, after which i got a different error saying "Process of Sword of the stars:The pit could not be started.

"The process has been successfully terminated" (0x0).

At this point i should mention that my system is running in german, and i can only try to translate the error as best as i can, it may not be 100% accurate in english and i could only provide screenshots of the errors in german.

When attempting to start the game without Steam, it simply closes, thus the Steam support was unable to help me on this matter. I'll try to list everything i have already tried to fix this issue.

Made sure .NET is installed
Reinstalled XNA
Tried running as administrator
Turned off all other programs to make sure none are interfering with the game(This includes Anti-virus software)
Checked the program for any damaged or missing files via Steam, which confirmed none were damaged
Restarting the decive

I would like to send the crash.txt or other txt files but unfortunately i cannot find them, they do not seem to be there, but if anyone can tell me where exactly those txt files are meant to be, i would gladly check again.

I'm grateful for any help or suggestions, to hopefully get the game to work again!

Hello Mecron!

I was able to run it on a different system, i have 500+ hours in the game but i recently got a new, better computer with a new OS and could not get it to run on this computer at all. Don't think that's important since it was on a different device, but it ran fine for years, and last time i checked was probably a few months ago.

I'm running Windows 10 version 1803 (Build 17134.345)
CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 2700X
RAM: G.Skill - DIMM 288-PIN - DDR4 - 2 x 8 GB
Mainboard: X470 Aorus Ultra gaming
Graphics card: ATI Radeon RX 580 Series
Harddrive: Seagate ST2000DM006 Barracuda 2TB

Don't really know why it wouldn't be working on the new system as it's better one, my best guess is that it may be related to Windows 10 but that's really just a guess and i have no idea :?

Can you post the crash.txt and log.txt? (Press Windows Key + R, and enter %AppData% to find The Pit folder.)

Unfortunately there's neither a "The Pit" folder, nor a "Steam" folder in which i could search for these files,i can only assume these files were never actually created by the program as it crashes before it could do so..

Hello! We might be able to get the information we need through the Windows Event Viewer.

Here's what you need to do:

1) Right-Click on the Windows Start Icon and select "Event Viewer" (alternatively, you can just type "Event Viewer" in the search bar)

2) With the event viewer open, double-click "Windows Logs" and select "Application"

3) Right-click on "Application" and select "clear log", this'll ensure that there isn't any garbage information that isn't actually related to the crash

4) Run 'The Pit' again, don't worry if it crashes (we actually want it to crash for this). You can leave the event viewer open

5) Go back to the Event Viewer, right-click on Application again, and select "Save All Events As" and pick you save location and filename

6) Post that saved log here

Thank you for the response Pocketnerd!

I have cleared the eventlog as instructed but after the game crashed, no entry was added in any of the logs, i checked all "Application" logs and none had any new entries after the crash.

Honestly, i'm sorry that i cannot provide better information, but appearently it doesn't really want to save informations about the crash anywhere..

Just a thought, but how exactly does the crash.txt file work? For me the file is missing, so i assume it is created when the game is running for the first time. Would it technically be possible for me to manually add, or create this .txt file, hoping that info about the crash will be added to it if the file already exists? Maybe the problem is just that it doesn't get far enough to create it, but it might still be able to use it, right?
