The first reference to Freehold that I am aware of is the 2013 calendar from the Pit Indiegogo campaign. How long have you been kicking this idea around? How far along is the project and how much longer before we see more hints and teases like the calendar? I do occasional work for my friend's YouTube channel on tabletop gaming and would love to shoot an episode on this!
Cheers

Sounds like fun. What would you need from us in order to shoot an episode of your show?
As to the history of development: the idea to create role-playing game set in the Sword of the Stars universe has been on my mind since 2010, and I have been acquiring a library of concept art and illustrations to create the core rule book and some racial source books ever since. I started kicking around ideas and putting together resources in 2011 more formally, and by 2012 had a pretty solid idea of what I wanted to make: a science fiction/space opera role-playing game with really well developed races and classes to play.
One of the fans on Twitter recently referred to the SotSverse as "Science Fiction Tolkein", and that is definitely what I'm shooting for. I think that there is a reason that people have such an easy time playing and becoming emotionally involved with games of D&D, and I'd like players of Freehold to have the same ability to create a hundred characters that they really find meaty and interesting to explore as POV characters in an exciting, dangerous universe.
As to when we will move forward with it: I'm planning to start hosting the first alpha test "promotional events" (Character Generation demos and quick play-tests) in 2015. I'd like to put together a Kickstarter Campaign to try and fund development and publication of the Core Rule Book at least, and to help pay for some work to be done on an official SotSpedia website which would collect Lore and art from the universe, and (hopefully) host a Character Generator app which would let people create characters quickly and easily.

Any thoughts about hosting a play-by-post section of the forums to facilitate online play in a centralized location where folks can meet up to join and run games?

So another reason to be really excited for 2015 then?

The sun was born, and so it shall die, so only shadows comfort me. I know in darkness, I will find you, giving up inside like me... Each day shall end as it begins, and though you're far away from me... I know in darkness, I will find you, giving up inside like me...

I remember you referenced doing this when I was thinking of running such a game myself and sent you a PM about source material for the universe some time ago myself.
Re: What is the development timeline for Freehold thus far?
Yep. Quite a few people have adapted some SotS material for other SF role-playing systems over the years. I thought it would be interesting to make a home-brewed system for fun.

Wow... somehow I completely missed the addition of this forum!
Is Freehold made with a unique rule set or are you using the open gaming license stuff or what?

From here:
Erinys wrote:*chuckles* Not super secret, really! I will start posting discussion threads and sample mechanics if people are interested in discussing it. The Pit is already for sale to the general public, often for quite cheap, so...researching the basic concepts of Kerberos rpg's set in the SotSverse probably not too hard.

... so it will be a unique rule-set.
