Advantages
Disadvantages
Some Planet Concepts
Rockbug Planetary Enviroment

Almost all of these threads got sidetracked, however with this collated data, I think we should be able to flesh something good out.

I'm not sure any of that belongs on the reference thread so far. Granted, I agree with 90% of it :) but I just don't know if that was discussion or decision.

You're a better sentient than I Jandor, I was going to summarize a large number of threads before my energy waned and projects at work increased.

Yup, I put it in here so the Story team could finalize it. Some of it is kind of conflicting or unresolved.

@ Glacialis: Anything to put off the work I need to do

Mebbe we could ask CatchCharyou to split the relevant posts into a new thread called "Story - Gathering information" or something like that? We can verify decisions made there and plant them in the Reference thread when everything's all cleaned up.

Im totally lost... I read a referens to the Cthonics and i decided to look it up. I found it on sots wiki and i find the race very interesting! But please help me out here. I have these questions:

The Cthonics are a race for a mod?
The mod is in development and not complete?
The first release of the mod will contain only the race of Cthonics (and techs bla bla).
Where can i find a feature list of some kind of this mod?

The Cthonics are indeed a mod race. The race will be the mod. No other features are planned. The mod is indeed currently in development, though not much is going on at the moment (due to a lack of artists).

There's a lot of ideas bouncing around but as Zabaron says, without 3D artists there's not much we can do. We can always work on fluff / background / stories though people have been really busy.

How is the following for a quick general race background? If people like it I can try and flesh it out some more. Add more detail on Motile life, more Sidebars, etc.

General Description:

The Cthonics are a silicon based species of hunter gatherers and photovores, requiring large amounts of heat and light to perform most biological functions. They are the process of billions of years of evolution on an almost atmosphere free Homeworld that has been continuously super-heated via its close proximity to a large main sequence star.
Despite there outward appearance and unconventional evolution they are a fully sentient star faring species.

Technology:

Ships: Cthonics move through space using a unique technological development known as the Jump Drive, no other species has so far been able to figure out how this technique works and it remains a closely guarded secret of the Cthonics.

The Jump drive principally works by charging up large capacitors in the ships engine section, after enough charge has been gained the drive is engaged and the space in front of the Cthonic ship is pulled inwards towards the vessel, when the charge in the capacitors is completely used the area of space that was manipulated will rebound back its original coordinates “catapulting” the Cthonic ship along with it.

This method of interstellar travel is generally not practical for small scale maneuvers and in tactical combat Cthonic ships rely on traditional reaction drives for propulsion, although the Jump drive can be engaged at a lower charge level for the purpose of retreat.

Physical and Social Characteristics:

Cthonics are a unique species displaying traits that would be associated with both predators and plants in a carbon based equivalent. They appear to have evolved from ambush predators and require a varied diet of metals and crystals obtained from both their planets vast magma oceans and varied Silicon life-forms.

Cthonics have many flexible digits on the inside of the forearms and tail; these digits are long and muscular, capable of exerting a very strong grip as well as manipulating objects with care and delicacy.
While the forearms have a full range of shoulder and wrist motions, the tail in particular is noteworthy for its exceptional dexterity.

Internally Cthonics bare very little resemblance to any carbon based life so far encountered. Their internal organs are entirely crystalline in nature and mostly seem dedicated to storing and processing of heat and light, which is used heavily in the Cthonic digestive process. However several organs appear to be dedicated to pumping nutrients from the “stomach” around the body; Cthonics however appear to lack anything resembling lungs and indeed cannot make any vocalizations; their method of communication is based on complex light displays and subtle vibrations.
Their tails particularly are very sensitive to vibrations and a Cthonic interested in a subject or conversation will very often instinctively press its tail onto the ground to better “hear” what is being said.
The eyes are also exceptionally well developed and are capable of making out small objects over vast distances as well as being able to see in an incredibly large spectrum of light. Cthonics can also emit light from their eyes in the same large spectrum as which they see, they also frequently adjust the intensity and focus as this plays a large part in Cthonic body language.

The Cthonics are genderless as we would understand it and breed by forming large crystalline structures known as Immotiles (see Immotiles below) from a group of three mature Cthonics.

Immotiles:

The Immotiles are the segment of Cthonic society responsible for Governance, Administration, Philosophy and child-rearing; They generally form around 5-10% of the population.

The Immotile form is a necessary quirk of reproduction on the Cthonic homeworld and is common to many of the planets species. While in the daytime there planet is incredibly hot due to its close proximity to the Sun, during the night the planets sparse atmosphere struggles to retain that heat; the Immotile form basically forms a huge heat storage unit in which to provide the right conditions for incubation and growth of the Cthonics young. Essentially a large sentient tree the Immotile contains and can communicate the knowledge of the three Motiles that formed it, indeed Motiles often maintain an intense loyalty to the Immotile that spawned them and small clans often spring up around these monoliths, usually specialized in the former professions of the parent unit.

Immotiles normally reproduce for around 100 years with the incubation and growth of a single Cthonic generally taking around 2-3 years, although with modern science and “agriculture” this active child rearing period can be increased dramatically.
Immotiles draw nutrients and heavy metals up from the ground below them and use these to grow the young Cthonics, although as they age and the ground below them becomes more barren they become unable to create any more offspring, it is at this point in life that Cthonic Immotiles generally take up an active role in Governance, Administration or Philosophy; as they age there thought patterns become deeper and slower, until eventually the Immotile falls silent.

as to conflict in their culture, of the immotiles each end up with a sort of clan loyal to them, is it not quite possable for a pair of immotiles to have a diffrent view of what is best for the species? extrapolating this, its quite possable for immotiles to wind up forming factions baised on their common views of the best course of action to take. minor things wouldent cause conflict, but when things like "how do we treat the Morrigi?" or "what should the empire focus its budget on?" come up, I can not help but imagine conflict arising. Then their is the facts of interstellar empire, with so many so distant from each other, it is more then possable for confict to arise amoung the people, and amoung the people and other races. also, if the only source for information from the outside for a Immotile is others, then it is quite possable for them to simply be lied too, "For their own good".

Conflict need not come from their very nature, for they nature must now adress a bunch of concerns that it has never faced before.
